Lanaʻi Wastewater Reclamation Facility

  • Rainfall on watershed areas seeps through volcanic rock supplying underground aquifers with water, where the water is stored. The Lānaʻi Water Company pumps water from these aquifers through wells, and potable water is delivered to homes throughout Lānaʻi through a network of water mains.

  • Untreated wastewater throughout Lānaʻi is conveyed through sewer mains to the Lānaʻi Wastewater Reclamation Facility, where it undergoes secondary treatment producing R-2 reclaimed water. An adjacent facility then upgrades the water to R-1 standards.

  • All wastewater received at Lānaʻi Wastewater Reclamation Facility undergoes secondary treatment producing R-2 reclaimed water, which is then upgraded to R-1 quality at an auxiliary facility. The reclaimed water is fully reused for landscape irrigation.

  • Reuse water, containing residual nutrients, can possibly leach into groundwater, contaminating it, and flow toward the ocean where it often emerges through openings on the reef, direct pathways from the wastewater treatment plant to the reef. Once introduced, the wastewater can mix with the seawater and potentially affect the health of these reef ecosystems (Lapointe 1997, Sutherland et al. 2010, Redding et al. 2013, Vega Thurber et al. 2014, Prouty et al. 2017).
